The Sport of Giving, Inc. Donates $175,000 to Benefit Breast Cancer

DULUTH, Ga. - July 25, 2009 - The Sport of Giving, Inc. an organization that supports breast cancer care and prevention, is pleased to announce the contribution of $175,000 to the following beneficiaries: Georgia Cancer Foundation’s low-cost screening and diagnostic program to help medically underserved women, the American Cancer Society’s Patient Navigator Program, a new freestanding Women’s Center at Gwinnett Medical-Lawrenceville, and Northside-Forsyth Hospital’s Breast Care Center.

"The total net proceeds of $175,000 from our 2009 events is a tribute to the commitment of our sponsors and volunteers to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.  We are proud to partner with the Georgia Cancer Foundation, The American Cancer Society, Gwinnett Medical Center and Northside Forsyth to provide access to the very best medical care for the women in our community," states Sheila Stevens, Founder and President of The Sport of Giving, Inc.

Funds were raised during 2009 through various sporting events including VolleyFest tennis tournaments, SwingFest golf tournaments and a RunFest 5K fun run.  Events were held in ten neighborhood venues in surrounding Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties. TPC Sugarloaf’s VolleyFest event luncheon speaker was Barbara Dooley, breast cancer survivor and wife of former University of Georgia Athletic Director, Vince Dooley. Many other breast cancer survivors spoke at each event’s award ceremony following each tournament to promote awareness.

In only nine years, VolleyFest, SwingFest, and RunFest have generated over one million dollars donated in support of breast cancer initiatives.  Participation has jumped from 56 ladies in 2001 to an astonishing 500+ participants in 2009.

Since 2001, the vision at The Sport of Giving remains the same: to allow access to the very best medical care and the highest level of support to those diagnosed with breast cancer.  The Sport of Giving encourages other clubs and neighborhoods in the Atlanta Metro Area to host creative fundraising sporting events that make a difference.
